Recreated
Junk Puppets!
What are "Junk Puppets"? Puppets made from recycled materials... milk cartons, sponges, pieces of rope, bottle tops... Anything with an interesting shape and color is fair game! Below are samples of "junk puppets" or "recycled materials puppets" made by students at Palm Elementary in San Bernadino. Can you identify some of the components?

Reinvented
When kids open their "artist eye", and discover the creative puppet possibilities of everyday, recyclable materials, they begin to evaluate and approach challenges with a new "what if" perspective.
In the classroom, your students will select their "junk puppet parts" from a wide variety of stuff that I bring in...you don't have to worry about supplying these materials! Although it's always great when the kids add to the mix by bringing in their own recyclables from home. Your kids will learn to look for shape, color, connectability of components, and movement potential for the type of puppet they have chosen to make... marionettes, rod puppets, hand puppets, etc.
In addition I will supply a variety of "connecting" materials...zip-ties, duct tape, glue, brads, wire etc, and will guide the students in the construction challenges of connecting odd shapes and surfaces together. Building "junk puppets" reinforces in children creative problem solving, engineering skills, geometry concepts, and even math skills! For example... if the puppet you are making is an animal with eight legs and you can make two legs out of one piece of rope, how many pieces of rope will you need? If each leg is 6 inches long and you can get two legs out of one piece of rope, how long does that piece of rope need to be?
